Texas Partners in Policymaking is an advanced leadership development training program for self-advocates and parents of children with developmental disabilities (DD). Graduates from the statewide program will become partners with policymakers in Texas and work to improve the lives of people with DD. The deadline to apply for the 2018 to 2019 class is May 1, 2018.
Texas Partners in Policymaking is an innovative statewide leadership development training program. People who graduate from the program go on to work with policymakers to improve the lives of Texans with DD. Graduates work to influence policy and change systems so more people with DD are fully included in their communities and exercise control over their own lives. Some graduates might go on to become policymakers themselves.
During the training program, participants acquire the information and skills necessary to partner with policymakers and advocate for important disability issues at the local, state, and federal levels. Participants will learn about topics like community living, disability history, employment, inclusive education, the Texas Legislature, and more. Participants will also learn tactics and strategies to effectively advocate for disability issues and influence policy change. Presenters will be state or national experts on disability issues or advocacy who understand the connection between government, systems change, and policy results.
The program consists of eight two-day training sessions that will be held monthly from August 2018 to April 2019. Sessions begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and conclude at 3 p.m. on Saturday. There will not be a session in December 2018.
Participants will be people with DD and parents of children with DD. There is no cost to participate in the program and authorized travel costs will be covered. Only Texas residents are eligible to apply. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, May 1, 2018.
