Project Period

Project Objective
The Gulf Coast African American Family Support Conference is modeled after the Central Texas African American Family Support Conference hosted annually by Austin Travis County Integral Care. The conference will strengthen the knowledge and skills of individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, community members and professionals about health care services by using culturally sensitive education supports and partnerships. It will also promote the development of supports and services needed for individuals with disabilities to be fully integrated in their communities, reduce stigma, and eliminate health disparities. In the first year, Helpful Interventions will host meetings to research systemic and resource disparities in the Houston area African-American community. The 2013 conference, with a theme of “Embracing Healthy Families: Mind, Body and Soul,” was attended by more than 300 participants on November 1, 2013. The conference featured former Houston Oilers NFL Player Earl Campbell, accompanied by his son, Tyler, who spoke on their individual and family’s journey enduring health challenges, surviving depression, and addiction. The next conference will be November 7, 2014, in Houston
