The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) encourages organizations to submit presentation proposals and share best practices with other states at the 2019 National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) Annual Conference. The deadline to submit a presentation proposal is March 8.
About the Conference
NACDD is the national association for the 56 Councils on Developmental Disabilities (DD Councils) across the United States and its territories. TCDD is a member of NACDD.
Each summer, NACDD partners with a different DD Council to co-host the NACDD Annual Conference. During the conference, people and organizations from around the country come together to share the innovative programs and strategies they are implementing to improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The 2019 NACDD Annual Conference will be held July 10-11 in New Orleans.
TCDD encourages organizations in Texas to submit presentation proposals so other states can learn from the work being done in Texas to improve the lives of people with I/DD. The theme for the 2019 conference is “Jazz It Up! Building on Our Potential” and NACDD is seeking presentation topics that are innovative, impactful, and inspiring. Presentation topics could include the following:
- Community integration
- Disability policy
- Leadership strategies and skill building
NACDD is particularly interested in proposals that focus on (A) leadership strategies, (B) impacting the service and supports systems, and (C) advocates taking action on disability issues.
This is an excellent opportunity to share the innovative work being done in Texas with a national audience. At the 2018 NACDD Annual Conference, the organizations listed below provided information about how their work is improving the lives of Texans with I/DD:
- Representatives from Community Healthcore shared the story of how a community living center was established in Longview, Texas to improve community integration and supports for people with I/DD.
- A team from Houston Community College discussed how the VAST Academy provides unique educational opportunities for students with I/DD.
- Staff from Texas A&M University’s Center on Disability and Development talked about how their Postsecondary Access and Training in Human Services (PATHS) Program prepares people with disabilities to work as Direct Support Professionals.
